About Us

Welcome to Bancroft Bible Chapel

We're so glad you found us! Bancroft Bible Chapel is a welcoming church family in the heart of downtown Bancroft, within walking distance of everything in town.

We are a group of people from a wide range of backgrounds. We gather to bring glory to God by singing His praises and learning from His Word, the Bible. Our desire is to wholeheartedly serve our Lord Jesus Christ together by encouraging and uplifting one another, and by pointing people to a relationship with Christ, the ultimate giver and satisfier of life to the fullest.

We're a family- and kid-friendly church. You'll find a Sunday School for the children, a classroom, and an amazing free lending library with books, movies, and music for all ages. Casual dress is the norm, there's coffee for the grown-ups and juice boxes for the kids on Sundays and Tuesdays, and everyone is welcome: young families, parents and kids, youth and teens, singles and seniors, from Bancroft, Hastings Highlands, and all around the area.

Our music ranges from choruses and hymns to more contemporary songs, and several worship teams and leaders take turns leading.

Optional Sunday School

Kids are always welcome in the service. If they'd like, fun Sunday School offers games, toys, crafts, sometimes baking, and learning about God and Jesus.

A nursery, if you'd like it

Little ones are welcome in the service, too. The nursery has toys, a large bathroom with a change table, and a quiet room with playpens for naps, and you can still hear the service from inside.

Accessible building

An elevator is available for anyone who can't use the stairs.

No offering is taken up

If you'd like to give, drop-in offering boxes are at the back of the church in the overflow area. Envelopes are above the box if you'd like one (for tax receipts).

Families welcome, just as you are. Kids of all ages are always welcome to stay with their families in the service. Sunday School and the nursery are there if you'd like them.

Sunday School for Kids & Families

We believe children are precious and important, so we offer a special time of Sunday School just for them. It's completely optional: kids are always welcome to stay with you for the whole service. If your children would like to join in, they can head downstairs with our Sunday School group after the first 10–15 minutes of the service. There, a group of devoted, caring volunteers leads them in Bible lessons and songs prepared just for them.

Sunday School is fun! Kids enjoy games, toys, crafts, sometimes baking, and of course learning about God and Jesus.

Nursery for Little Ones

Our nursery is a bright, cheerful room for little ones and their parents, with toys and a play area. It's there whenever you'd like it, and babies are always welcome to stay with you in the service, too.

You can still hear the service from inside the nursery, so if you step in with your little one, you won't miss a thing.

Communion

On the first Sunday of each month, Communion, also called the Breaking of Bread, is part of our 10:30 am worship service. It's a time of remembering what our Saviour Jesus Christ did for us when He died on the cross for our sins. He took our place to give us new life, hope for the future, eternal life, peace, and forgiveness, simply by trusting and believing in Him.

Weekly Bible Study

We're currently running the Alpha Series, with dinner and drinks provided (coffee for the grown-ups and juice boxes for the kids), so come straight from work or school and share a meal around the table. It's a casual, interactive time where we discuss and learn together. All welcome, including young families, youth and teens!

Kids, Youth & Teens

Children are a big part of our church family. Sunday School for kids runs every Sunday during the 10:30 am service, with games, toys, crafts, and learning about God and Jesus. Kids are always welcome to stay with their families in the service, too. For the littlest ones, a nursery is available if you'd like it. Youth and teens are always welcome, on Sundays and at our Tuesday Alpha dinner at 5:30 pm.

Our Amazing Free Lending Library

Readers of every age, this one is for you! Our amazing free lending library has books, movies, and music for all ages, for grown-ups, teens, and kids, with a big children's section for little readers. It's all free to borrow!

Our church library was founded many years ago by Mary Mitchell and has grown into a valuable, well-established resource for our church and the wider faith community. It offers study books and topical subjects, instructional studies by a variety of authors, and novels grounded in Christian values. There are also videos and Christian movies, plus a comprehensive children's section with books and videos that encourage learning and spiritual growth at every age. It's a welcoming place for reading, study, reflection, and enrichment for individuals and families alike.

Sometimes we all need someone to be praying for us! Life can be difficult and challenging at times. Our prayer group, a group of concerned believers, meets every week to pray for your needs.

Statement of Faith

What We Believe

We believe that…

The Bible

The Bible (Scriptures) is the only basis and authority of our belief. It is God's Word to us in sixty-six books of the Old and New Testament. It was written and revealed to chosen men through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In their original writings they are without error and are the complete and final revelation of God. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21)

God

There is only one true God eternally existing in three equal persons – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the beginning, God created the world and everything in it and continues to maintain His creation until His redemptive purposes are fulfilled. (Genesis 1; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

Jesus Christ

The Lord Jesus Christ is God, was miraculously conceived of the Holy Spirit and born to a virgin. He lived a sinless life in perfect obedience to the Father. He voluntarily paid the price for the sins of all people by dying on the cross as a substitute for our sin to bring salvation to all who trust in Him alone. He rose from the dead and ascended into heaven where He is now the only mediator between God and man. (John 1:1-12; Matthew 1:21-23; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 8:34; Acts 1:9-11)

Man

Man was created perfect in God's image, but fell into sin through Adam's disobedience making it impossible to please God in any human way. Because of man's sinful nature he faces eternal hell and separation from God. (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12; Titus 3:5; Revelation 20:15)

Salvation

Salvation is the core purpose of all Scripture. It is by understanding through the Spirit of God that Christ's death included my sins. Salvation is by personally trusting and believing in the saving blood of Jesus shed on the cross. This act of faith and repentance restores our relationship with God and secures for us Eternal Life. This salvation is not received by, nor based on any sacrament, merit, or good work on our part. (John 3:16; Romans 10:9; John 3:36; John 5:24; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; Galatians 5:1)

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is that person of the Godhead who convicts of sin, causes spiritual birth, indwells every Christian, seals, guides and equips us to be Christ-like in attitude, speech and action. He teaches and fills believers, enabling them to walk in obedience to God and His Word using gifts of the Spirit for the building of the church and to bear fruit for the glory of God. (Acts 1:8; Ephesians 5:18; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 1:13-14)

The Church

The Church is made up of everyone who has placed their faith in Christ. They are all members of His body, the one true church. However, the Bible commands believers to gather regularly together for worship, prayer, fellowship, and teaching of the Word in a local gathering and to work together in love and unity using each one's spiritual gifts and talents for building one another and for the ultimate purpose of glorifying Christ. (Hebrews 10:25; 1 Corinthians 12:7-11; Acts 2:42-47; Ephesians 4:11-13)

The Return of Christ

The Return of Christ may happen at any time where the Lord Jesus Christ will take His Church up to be with him for all eternity. All those, living and dead, who have personally trusted Jesus Christ as their Saviour will rise with Him. This truth should be to every believer an ongoing incentive to holy living and faithful service. (Acts 1:9-11; 1 John 2:17; 1 Corinthians 15:51-56; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

The Ordinances

Two ordinances have been commanded by the Lord to be observed and obeyed by all believers. Baptism and the Lord's Supper (Communion).

Baptism by immersion is an outward expression of an inward change and commitment to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and testifies to the outside world one's desire to walk in a new life of devotion and obedience to Christ. (Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 6:3-7)

The Lord's Supper (Communion) was instituted by Christ Himself to “REMEMBER” His sacrificial death for our sins. (Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

Our Story

Our History: Serving Bancroft Since 1902

Bancroft Bible Chapel has been part of the Bancroft community for more than 120 years.

  1. 1902

    Humble beginnings

    Tom Maxwell moved his family to Bancroft and opened a harness shop. Around that time, local believers began meeting in the room over Tom's harness shop, and the assembly has been meeting ever since. Early leaders included Tom Maxwell, Jim Reynolds, and Albert Reynolds.

  2. 1924

    Growth and revival

    After a season of Gospel meetings with many new believers, the growing congregation outgrew its meeting room above the drug store on Bridge Street West. The group rented the former Presbyterian Church and later purchased it.

  3. 1952

    Our building on the main street

    A new, larger building was built on the main street in 1952, largely with volunteer labour under the supervision of George Easton. Soon after its first prayer meeting it was badly damaged by fire. It was rebuilt, has been renovated and expanded twice since, and is known today as Bancroft Bible Chapel.

  4. Today

    Rooted in heritage, serving our community

    Bancroft Bible Chapel treasures its heritage from the Brethren movement, while enjoying the benefits of being a non-denominational, evangelical church in the community of Bancroft. Pastor Jim Mitchell, who grew up in this church, has served as our pastor since 2011.

Our Leadership

Pastor Jim Mitchell & Claudette Mitchell

Bancroft Bible Chapel has a special place in Pastor Jim's heart. It's the church he grew up in as a child, and where he came to know Jesus Christ as his Saviour.

Jim married Claudette, from the Gaspé Coast, and together they went to Dallas Theological Seminary, where Jim earned his Master's degree in Theology and a Doctorate in Ministry. They served the Lord for over 20 years at New Carlisle Bible Chapel in Quebec before feeling led back to Bancroft, where Jim became Pastor of Bancroft Bible Chapel in 2011.

Their desire is to seek and serve the Lord with all their heart and to help lead others to a life that is full, rewarding, and complete through Jesus Christ.
